Opening Story

Replace the sensor.

Except that’s not necessarily what the code means.

First, an Important Point About Florida Emissions Testing

Florida drivers sometimes ask us:

“Do I need an emissions test to renew my registration?”

For ordinary Florida passenger vehicles, Florida does not currently operate a routine state emissions inspection-and-maintenance program requiring motorists to periodically pass an emissions test.

Emissions inspection programs do exist in various parts of the United States, where vehicles may have to pass testing as part of state or local requirements. The EPA describes these programs as a way of identifying higher-emitting vehicles that may require repairs. (US EPA)

Florida law still addresses vehicle safety and required equipment, and the state’s statutes address motor-vehicle emissions standards. But that should not be confused with a recurring Florida emissions inspection requirement for everyday motorists. (Online Sunshine)

What Is Your Vehicle’s Emissions System?

Your emissions system isn’t one single part underneath the car.

It’s a collection of mechanical, electrical, electronic, fuel, intake, and exhaust components working together.

A scan tool might retrieve a code related to:

“Install a new oxygen sensor.”

The sensor could actually be functioning correctly and reporting a condition caused by something else.

This distinction matters.

Solid Check Engine Light

A steady Check Engine Light usually means the vehicle’s computer has detected a fault that should be diagnosed.

The vehicle may still appear to drive normally.

Don’t assume that means the problem should be ignored.

Flashing Check Engine Light

A flashing Check Engine Light can indicate a more serious condition, commonly a significant active misfire.

Unburned fuel entering the exhaust can potentially overheat and damage the catalytic converter.

But remember:

An oxygen-sensor code does not automatically mean you need an oxygen sensor.

Catalytic Converter Diagnosis

The catalytic converter is a critical component of the emissions system.

Its job is to help convert harmful exhaust pollutants into less harmful substances before they leave the exhaust system.

Catalytic converter problems may develop because of:

  • Age and mileage
  • Internal deterioration
  • Engine misfires
  • Incorrect air/fuel mixture
  • Oil consumption
  • Coolant contamination
  • Excessive heat
  • Physical damage

This is especially important because a catalytic converter failure can sometimes be the result of another engine problem.

Replacing the converter without correcting the condition that damaged it can potentially put the replacement converter at risk.

EVAP System Diagnosis

Gasoline produces vapors.

Instead of allowing those vapors to escape directly into the atmosphere, your vehicle uses an Evaporative Emission Control System, commonly called the EVAP system, to contain and manage them.

Depending on vehicle design, the system may include:

  • Fuel cap
  • Charcoal canister
  • Purge valve
  • Vent valve
  • Vapor lines
  • Pressure sensors
  • Electrical circuits
  • Other components

Even a relatively small EVAP leak can sometimes illuminate the Check Engine Light.


Can a Loose Gas Cap Cause the Check Engine Light?

Yes—on some vehicles, a loose, damaged, or improperly sealing fuel cap can cause an EVAP-related fault.

But this has become such a common explanation that people sometimes assume every EVAP code is a gas cap.

It isn’t.

If you properly secure the cap and the Check Engine Light remains on or returns, the EVAP system may require further diagnosis.


Engine Misfires & Emissions

A misfire occurs when combustion isn’t happening properly in one or more cylinders.

Possible causes can include:
